Green Fleet Revolution: How Electric Vehicles Are Transforming Indonesia's Logistics Landscape

Jakarta - Indonesia's logistics industry is undergoing a significant transformation with the emergence of Electric Vehicle-as-a-Service (EVaaS) solutions. Dash Electric, a startup founded in 2023 by Aditya Brahmana and Robert Mulianto, has become a pioneer in providing electric vehicle fleets for business logistics needs in Indonesia.

In an interview conducted in November 2024, Aditya Brahmana, CEO and Co-Founder of Dash Electric, explained the company's vision. "We are building a platform with a 'driver-as-a-service' concept. This allows businesses to have the experience of owning an in-house logistics fleet, without the operational burden and large capital expenditure," he said.

Dash Electric has served diverse clients from various sectors. Multinational logistics companies such as Lazada, DHL, and JNE entrust part of their delivery operations to Dash. In the F&B sector, Janji Jiwa (Kopi Kenangan Group) uses this service for their product distribution. Startups like Sayurbox, Jala, and Harvesea are also Dash partners in delivering sustainable shipping.

Robert Mulianto, Co-Founder and COO of Dash Electric, brings more than a decade of experience in supply chain management from companies like DHL and Tokopedia. "We see a large gap in the market. Many businesses want to switch to green solutions, but are hindered by high initial investment and operational complexity," Robert said in his LinkedIn post.

According to data released by the company, Indonesia's transportation sector contributes significant carbon emissions, with motorcycles alone accounting for 36.1% of total transportation emissions in 2022. With approximately 137 million motorcycles on the road, Indonesia lags behind in electric vehicle adoption compared to other Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam.

The Dash platform provides a comprehensive solution, not just vehicle rental. The operational dashboard allows clients to monitor deliveries in real-time, integrated tracking systems, and customization capabilities according to each business's service level agreement (SLA). Clients can choose services from 15-minute delivery for groceries to scheduled same-day delivery.

For drivers, Dash offers a rent-to-own program that allows them to own electric vehicles without upfront costs. "Many drivers previously saw EVs as luxury items, but through Dash, they can now access sustainable transportation that also reduces their operational costs," Robert explained.

In November 2024, Dash Electric announced the closing of an oversubscribed seed funding round, led by The Radical Fund and co-led by Bali Investment Club. Other participating investors include Schneider Electric Energy Access Asia (SEEAA), Aksara Ventures, and Kevin Aluwi (Co-founder and former CEO of Gojek). Antler, which previously supported at the pre-seed stage, also reinvested.

The fresh funds will be used to increase driver onboarding, expand the EV fleet, and develop in-house software to improve fleet management. The main focus is building seamless API integration with clients for operational optimization.

Dash recently launched a 4-wheel electric van fleet to support larger deliveries with zero emissions. This service complements the existing 2-wheel fleet, expanding the company's capabilities in serving various logistics needs.

Dash consistently achieves 97%+ delivery SLA, a 30% improvement compared to self-managed operations. The company also claims clients can cut up to 50% operational overhead by eliminating the need for internal fleet, driver recruitment, or third-party TMS tools.
